FAIR Resources

These links are either to Web pages hosted on the FAIR Website, or to FAIR Papers. FAIR Papers are short articles about specific topics or questions, written by members of FAIR. These articles can be downloaded and read in PDF format and are intended to be distributed by e-mail or print for the general use of our patrons. (To read FAIR Papers you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader. It can be downloaded free from the Adobe Web site.) Click on a title below to visit a FAIR Web page or to read the latest version of a FAIR Paper.

"Evolution," FAIR Wiki (City Unknown: FAIR) This FAIR Wiki article addresses the question regarding the official LDS stance on evolution.

"Pre-Adamites," FAIR Wiki (City Unknown: FAIR) This FAIR Wiki article addresses the following comments and questions: I am preparing to teach a Sunday School lesson on the creation, and surely the students will bring up the evidence of creatures that looked a lot like man, who lived and made tools, painted paintings, etc., all before what could be the existence of Adam. How do we answer who they were? Are they like animals? We clearly have evidence that they have lived here on this planet.

Trent D. Stephens, "Evolution and Latter-day Saint Theology: The Tree of Life and DNA," FAIR Conference 2003 (2003) In this 2003 FAIR Conference presentation, Dr. Stephens explains how Mormon doctrine and the scientific acceptance of evolution can be compatible.

Other Resources

The resources listed below are related items available on the Web that should be of interest. These links are to information not located on the FAIR Web site.

Michael R. Ash, "The Mormon Myth of Evil Evolution," Dialogue, Vol. 35:4 (Winter 2002), 19-38 Michael Ash examines some of the history surrounding the supposed conflict between LDS thought and the teaching of evolution and demonstrates that, while some vocal LDS leaders have denounced the teaching, official LDS doctrine has always been neutral on the position.

Duane E. Jeffrey, "Seers, Savants and Evolution: The Uncomfortable Interface," Dialogue, Vol. 8:3-4 (Autumn/Winter 1973), 41-75 Proffesor Jeffrey looks at the seeming conflict between some past LDS leaders and the teaching of Evolution and demonstrates that their need not be a conflict between the teaching of evolution and LDS thought.

Hugh W. Nibley, "Before Adam," (Provo, UT: FARMS) Hugh Nibley deals with questions related to pre-Adamic life and Noah's flood, showing the weaknesses of both the fundamentalist-religious and evolutionary-scientific approaches. Comparing these approaches to a drama, he concludes that neither has a plot but that Joseph Smith offers a vivid and workable plot. The accounts in the Pearl of Great Price communicate the unfolding of plans made before the creation and answer a number of perplexing questions.

Richard Sherlock, "Mormonism and Intelligent Design," FARMS Review (City Unknown: FARMS), 45-81 Richard Sherlock examines the evidence in favor of Intelligent Design in an LDS context.

Michael F. Whiting, "Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life: Some Assembly Required," BYU Speeches (24 May 2005) DNA specialist, Dr. Michael Whiting, discusses his work on insect evolution (and evolution in general). (MP3)
