Of course, you should feel free to explore the rest of the information on this page, as well. Using the same evidence, the conclusions reached by Dr. Woodward directly contradict those reached by Mr. Murphy. |
Over the past several years, Scott R. Woodward, Ph.D., has addressed the issue of DNA and the Book of Mormon. This page attempts to pull together related resources, all in one place.
Dr. Woodward is a Professor of Microbiology and faculty member of the Molecular Biology Program at Brigham Young University. He is also head of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group at BYU. While completing his postdoctoral work in molecular genetics at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Utah, he discovered a genetic marker used for the identification of carriers and the eventual discovery of the gene for cystic fibrosis. He was also involved with the identification of other gene markers for colon cancer and neurofibromatosis. He joined the faculty at BYU in 1989 and has been involved with several excavation teams in Seila, Egypt. While in Egypt, he directed the genetic and molecular analysis of Egyptian mummies, both from a commoners' cemetery and from Egyptian Royal tombs. Dr. Woodward has been the Scholar in Residence at the BYU Center for Near Eastern Studies in Jerusalem and a visiting professor at Hebrew University. His work has been featured both nationally and internationally on numerous programs including Good Morning America and both the Discovery and Learning Channels.
In December 2002 Dr. Woodward was a guest on RadioWest, an informational program originating with KUER in Salt Lake City. Dr. Woodward was on the program with Dr. Terryl Givens and Tom Murphy. You can read a transcript of the program (posted with permission by KUER) at this location. If you prefer to hear the actual broadcast, visit the KUER Web site, here.
In August 2001 FAIR sponsored a very successful annual conference. One of our speakers was Dr. Scott Woodward, who spoke on the topic of DNA and the Book of Mormon. During the course of his presentation, Dr. Woodward discussed the current state of DNA research and how that bears on the popular anti-Mormon claims that DNA disproves the Book of Mormon.
To see the FAIR overview of Dr. Woodward's presentation, make sure you read the review by Cooper Johnson. (It is a good idea to read the review before you actually watch the video, as it will provide an "executive summary" of what you will see.)
If you would like to see the actual Dr. Woodward presentation, you can use the following links.
If you would rather have a copy of Dr. Woodward's presentation for yourself, you can order one from our FAIR Store. Just click here for details.
The FAIR Web site has quite a bit more information related to DNA and the Book of Mormon. If you are interested in more information on this fascinating subject, click here.
